A 2018 series captured while in my first year at Ilam School of Fine Arts, where I reacted visually to the philosopher Plato, and his cave theory.
The theory describes how society watches shadows projected on the walls of the cave by their enslavers, who they never got to see, from objects passing in front of a fire behind them.
The shadows are the prisoners’ only reality, but not an accurate representation of the real world and ‘true reality’ that existed outside of the cave.
I see parallels to this theory with societies consumption of social media (shadows) that form ‘false reality ‘through devices by modern day ‘corporate enslavers’.
These series of images suggest we are living in a time of seeing false realities constructed and offered through algorithms and propaganda, that we invoke and engage in a personal echo chamber.
