christchurch photobook club
Another exciting focus of my energy is a new monthly Christchurch photobook club. I’m the host of the group where the focus is really simple -we meet and share a photobook, and it opens up some great discussions. The first one was on 1st March and it went really well, and everyone had a chance to share their thoughts and impressions of the book that they brought to the group. It was fascinating to see how differently people interpreted the same images and how they related to them on a personal level. Read more about it here.
Finally, while the past month has been great with commercial work, I always make time to shoot personal stuff. In fact I’ve decided that without personal work in my life I would probably quit photography all together. I’ve captured mostly portraits as part of my creatives and makers series and It was really great (and long overdue)to meet and capture Stephen at Ferrymead Film, hang with Barret in his music studio, and visit video director/ producer Robyn with the awesome Opal once again at their Diamond Harbour home. Robyn is relocating to the city, so we wanted to document the space more memories sake. I challenged myself not just with mixed middle of day light, but also wider angle on the Pentax. I love the results but I’m much happier shooting 6 x 6! on film. This is more apparent now than ever before so moving forward I’m not even going to waste my precious film shooting in the studio. Film moving forward is going to be exclusively for on location and project driven on 6×6 (mostly).
I also had a fantastic commercial session with Laura from portfolio models, and we shot a roll or two. I’m really loving shooting portraits on film in the studio with the lights, and I will be running a future workshop devoted to everything from mixing chemicals to the shoot and Dev/ scan. Watch this space.
